Hard times offer us the opportunity to get to know ourselves better and grow from adversity. This was one of the worst moments for me in 2020: The Broken Head Beach Shark Story.
June 2nd, 2020, Byron Bay, Australia.
After almost 3 months I already had a return date to fly back to Spain. I only had a week left to make the most of the unexpected “Australian light lockdown” that destiny awarded me with, and my passion for surfing. The forecast that day showed 30 knots southwest wind. Way too much for surfing. But it was my countdown period. So I thought that Broken Head beach, right under the headland, would be more sheltered. So I decided to give it a try there, without thinking twice. From the curve I could already see that it was not that bad after all, so I parked my van in a deserted parking lot, put on my wet suit and started walking down the shore.
Holding my board and with the water by my knees, as I untangled the leg rope from my ankle, I looked up and saw a one-meter shark surfing effortless the shore wave 5 meters right in front of me. I was impressed by its predatory gaze forged by thousands of generations of sea hunters. I hesitated. Probably given its size it would be harmless to surfers. Despite being lone hunters, I feared that if there was one, there might be others, and maybe bigger ones. I was not sure of what to do. I didn’t know if I should stay. I thought I was not going to be comfortable in the water, so after a few minutes I turned around and walked back to my van quite disappointed. I got in still wearing the wetsuit. As I drove home to Suffolk Park, I decided to take a quick look at The Cozy Corner, north end of Tallow Beach. Surely that day would not be so “cozy” with the strong south wind, much worse than Broken Head Beach, but hopefully no sharks! And already with the suit on and ready to get wet, I wasn’t losing anything by peeking out. Upon arrival I confirmed my worst suspicions. Although the wind was coming from the land, it was way too strong. But … since I was already there … I thought … Let’s go for a quick session, catch a couple of waves so I can go back home in peace.
I paddled out towards the breakwater, blind, I couldn’t see a thing. The wind was such that it kept throwing water towards my face without letting me see. I tried to catch a couple of waves and it was almost impossible. Going down the wave with that headwind was a nightmare. After being in middle of that annoying sprinkler for more than 15 minutes, I decided it was time to call it a day. I was standing up in the water. My board was floating a meter in front of me. In that instant, a crazy gust of wind blew out my surfboard throwing it violently against my face without giving me time to dodge it or protect myself.
The impact on my right temple was terrible. I was in shock. I noticed how I was gradually losing consciousness and I was about to faint. I was about to get carried away by that sweet sensation when I had a moment of lucidity, enough to realize that I was completely alone, with the water up to my waist and about to pass out.
I flopped down on the board. Blindly I felt my forehead, looked at my hand, and it was covered in blood. There was an intense and peculiar smell of rust. I did my best to get back to the parking lot while leaving a trail of blood. I laid down on the sand for a few seconds but felt I was losing my head again. It was like an uncontrollable sleep attack. Making a last effort, I got up and staggered to the van, where I picked up my phone and took this selfie to check the extent of the wound as a mirror.
As you can see in the photo, I was white as paper and with that lost gaze. I decided to drive to Byron Bay Hospital, without thinking, almost instinctively. It was only 15 minutes away but felt like hours. I nearly blacked out on two occasions. With some wipes I had in the van I was covering the wound and driving with one hand. Even so, I had an eye full of blood that prevented me from seeing properly. I even skipped the hospital exit and had to turn around. I finally got there, walked into the emergency room, and saw the reception desk at the end of the hallway. It must have been the feeling of comfort of having reached the right place. I only remember that suddenly everything was red, my legs gave out and … faded into black …
I woke up on a gurney while two nurses were putting blankets over me and my wetsuit and asking me questions. Half a bottle of organic glue, and 150 Australian dollars later, still quite groggy, I drove back home to Suffolk Park thinking along the way that I got a scar (indirectly) because of a shark … and that if I had stayed at Broken Head Beach sharing those waves with the shark, I would not have ended with a broken head myself.
Spending my last week in Byron Bay, unable to surf and as we say in Spain, watching the bulls from the sidelines, was far from what I had in mind for that week, and a lot harder than I thought. But I learned a very important lesson: Life sends us signals and we must learn to interpret them.
Ibiza, we can enjoy many pleasures when you hire a boat in Ibiza and one of them, not to mention the best, is the pleasure of being in one of the most beautiful coves in the world, not just spending the day bathing and lying down in the sand, but on your boat enjoying the sea breeze, the spectacular sunsets and its starry nights.
Although anchoring in the months of July and August may be impossible in some coves, especially the best known and crowded ones, that is why in this article we recommend you, if you are thinking about doing it, go for it on the months of June and September, where the level of tourism is lower than usual.
Impressive cove located in San Antonio, hidden among rocks and located in an enclave where tourists do not usually arrive, you can find one of the best coves to visit when you hire aboat in Ibiza. Beach of fine sand and surrounded by vegetation, is perfect for anchoring and relaxing. Although you will have to be careful with the depth, since there are enough rocks skimming the surface.
The great variety of marine fauna will surprise you very pleasantly in its wonderful crystalline waters, enjoying a day at the beach and a relaxed night watching the stars.
It is a must stop if you visit Ibiza by rental ship, although it is not exactly the quietest you can find an infinity of Beach Clubs where you will find world famous celebrities. You can see them anchoring on their big private yachts, but you can be near on your rental boat in Ibiza, we recommend that you visit it in September because, as we said before tourism is reduced in large quantity and the water is still very pleasant to be able to enjoy it, perfect time to hire a boat in Ibiza.
It is one of the most well-known coves of the island, although very busy by tourists, it will be essential to stop on the rental boat in Ibiza, spend at least one night in the cove is almost mandatory, after having enjoyed the day of its clear waters and crystalline and on its fine white sand. It is beautiful seaweed and rock bottoms where you can snorkel will leave you speechless, you will be able to enjoy an immense offer for practicing water sports while you anchor with your rental yacht. Although if you prefer something more relaxed you can enjoy a good swim and its bars and restaurants.
This is a really quiet beach due the low flow of tourists, it is a perfect option to leave our rental yacht in Ibiza at anchor point five meters, and access to the white sand with our zodiac to enjoy this delight of nature, since it is not It allows access to tourist boats due to its small size, giving way only to small and fishing boats, with a bottom of sand and rocks perfect for anchoring and enjoying the marine fauna.
You can not miss out on this Ibiza boat trip, which we consider the best cove in the whole island, for its wonderful white sand and crystal clear water. We strongly recommend that you stay in this cove with your best circle of friends so that you can enjoy it much more. To anchor, it will be possible to do it approximately five meters probe.
You will also find several restaurants and a splendid cafe where you can have a good breakfast to start the day with strength an continue the trip on your Ibizahire boat.
Located near Sant Josep de sa Talaia, we recommend this cove especially for its excellent quality for diving and snorkeling, since they have a large dimension and marine animal fauna, an open and abrupt coastline with a background of fine sand and waters not Extremely deep and in perfect conditions to carry out aquatic activities and see the living beings that inhabit them.
Cala Vedella o Badella
If what you are looking for is relaxation and tranquility this is not exactly the one we recommend, at least in high season, since it has a lot of variety in leisure, locals and restaurants that make them the best concurred beaches. So it becomes a perfect place to be accompanied by friends on a Ibiza boat hire. On the contrary, you can always get away a few meters and anchor a few meters away and away from the hustle and bustle that is concentrated on the beach and its surroundings.
Again, and as in the cove that precedes it (Cala Badella), it is not the most recommended place for tranquility and relaxation when you hire a boat in Ibiza, if that is what you are looking for, this cove is located in one of the most crowded areas of all the island of Ibiza, especially in high season, but it is a perfect place to anchor to be in your rental ship in Ibiza, this cove has a sand and seaweed unequaled funds, being used for anchoring probes to eight meters approximately.
This Cove is located very close to Cala Llonga, about four kilometers approximately, a stone’s throw sailing on our rental yacht in Ibiza. If we are very tired of this last cove we can give ourselves a rest and enjoy the tranquility that the natural state gives us this cove, more than anything because it is virgin, surrounded by rocks that allow the anchorage to be excellent and its clear waters allow visibility exceptional.
Our last stop on this list of the best beaches to enjoy when you Hire a Boat in Ibiza finish at Cala Molí, is a beach of fine sand and surrounded by high cliffs that will turn the scenario into a dream. The anchoring is done in about five meters with a sandy bottom that seems expressly drawn.
We hope that you have enjoyed the same as us, listing the ten best coves to enjoy in a rental boat in Ibiza, we wish you could use it well and have a trip anchor in Ibiza in fantasy.

Typical land issues vs sailing boat charter Ibiza
You don't picture yourself on board of a sailing boat charter in Ibiza everyday. But think about it, when you go on vacation to an island, you spend most of the day struggling to find your way through the narrow roads on your rental bike or car. The final goal is usually visiting the best beaches and coves on the island. With a chartered sailing boat in Ibiza, you will never experience these typical problems that you usually suffer on land. Take the best of all the Ibiza boat trips on a private yacht, catamaran or sailing boat.
Forget about renting a car and wasting your morning on the parking lot next to the beach looking for a spot where to leave your car. On most of the world famous beaches in Ibiza and Formentera, it's quite common to find full parking lots already by noon.
With your sailing boat charter Ibiza you will be able to see all this "from the other side." Your only concern will be to let the skipper take care of the hard work on the catamaran while you are comfortably lying on the net enjoying the amazing view. A catamaran is much more than a normal boat. It is actually a floating apartment.
This type of nautical tourism is getting more popular thanks to our modern boats full of amenities and reasonable prices. Many of our customers are surprised by our fees and the small price it costs per person. They acknowledge that chartering a sailing boat in Ibiza never crossed their minds because they thought the price would be much higher and that they felt it was a luxury for a wealthy few. Quite the contrary! In high season, a week at a semi-decent hotel or apartment in Ibiza or Formentera is probably more expensive than a week on our boat. And not to mention that the vacation experience is completely different.
Also, it is important that you take into account that most of our catamarans and sailing boats are brand new and better equipped than many apartments on land. They are full of amenities. Can you picture your friends and your family spending such a great day, sailing from Ibiza to Formentera, anchoring in front of the nice restaurants in Illetes, disembarking for a fancy lunch, and taking a nice siesta back to Ibiza? Are you still thinking about it? Join us on the islands this summer. Do not let your friends brag about it without being a part of it! Sailing boat hire Ibiza!

Disembarking for lunch is always a great idea
Thinking about having lunch at one of the many restaurants located on the beaches we will be sailing by? Not a problem! In fact, we can even lend you a hand with your reservation. During high season, reserving a table can become a headache. Not to worry though, we will do everything we can to land you that perfect spot for lunch.
From arranging a reservation by Illetes- a beautiful beach in Formentera- at an upscale location such as Molì de la Sal, Juan y Andrea, Es Ministre, Tanga, El Pirata, Tiburon or Beso Beach (former Big Sur) to coordinating anchorage by the bay of San Antonio in Calabassa or Cala Conta and disembarking to eat at well known spots such as CBBC, Silla dens Bosc, Ses Roques or Sunset Ashram. With a simple heads up, we will be sure to point you in the best direction.
In case you decide that you do not want to spend a minute longer than needed off the boat, the option to bring food on board is always available. All vessels that we offer on our boat trips in Ibiza are equipped with a spacious cool box that you can fill with ice and your choice of food and drinks.
Please read below for details on all of our options for our Ibiza boat trips for sailing boats, catamarans, power yachts, and speed boats.
OPTION 1: Catamarans and sailing boats
Choosing one of our catamarans or sailing boats will only lead to a marvellous boat tour in Ibiza. For day excursions, most of our catamarans and sailing boats fit up to 11 people on board- this does not include our wonderful skipper.
For those who haven’t spent much time on a sailing boat, we usually recommend going with the catamaran. What most differs a catamaran from a sailing boat are the two hulls it contains. A catamaran has the characteristic of two sailing boats side by side making it, not only wider, but more stable and comfortable than a traditional sailing boat as well. Also, who could forget the trampolines at the front of the catamaran? Let’s be honest, this will possibly be your favourite spot to lie down while sailing!
High season is usually defined as June 15th to September 30th. During this time of year we tend to offer only full day charters. Of course, depending on availability, if you are interested in just a half day excursion, we will be more than happy to see what we can work out for you.
Video: Come and float over the waves with us!
Catamaran Ibiza, relaxing times after having lunch in Formentera.
Boat tours starting from different points
Unlike other charter companies in Ibiza that offer only full weeks, our vessels are always available for daily boat rides around Ibiza departing from San Antonio or the bay of Porroig (south of Ibiza) and Formentera- even throughout the high season.
Sail with us and we promise you won’t regret it. In fact, we guarantee that it will not be anything short of the most amazing experience you ever lived in Ibiza!
OPTION 2: Speed boats and power yachts
If you are a speed aficionado, our speed boats and power yachts are calling your name.
With the rental of one our swift speed boats or luxury power yachts, that are based in the bay of Porroig, in the south of the island, you can arrive at Formentera Island in less than 20 minutes! That practically leaves you all day to enjoy the beautiful white sand beaches and the delicious restaurants.
Boat trips in Ibiza - itineraries and timetables
We have itineraries around the best beaches in Ibiza and the nearby island of Formentera, with transparent turquoise waters and memories waiting to be made.
For groups smaller than 6 people, we would like to offer you a nice discount for the larger boats so you too could receive the experience you are looking for.
We are also more than happy to offer you a good deal for our boat tours in Ibiza if you are a loving couple or a small family.
On the Lagoon 380 catamaran, you can book half day excursions lasting 3.5 hours. Feel free to choose between the more economical morning half day trip for a short tour of Ibiza’s amazing beaches or the afternoon half day trip for a sunset that will leave you in awe.
Remember that our fees include fuel, tax, and our lovely captain that will unquestionably show you a great time! 🙂
Outings to admire the sunset while our catamaran is anchored in front of Cafe del Mar and Cafe Mambo are also offered. You can choose to take a half day trip of 3.5 hours to enjoy the sunset or select just a quick sunset voyage that typically takes place from 20:30 to 22:00.
Boat trips along the best beaches in Ibiza
To commence our boat tour of the best beaches in Ibiza, we will begin at San Antonio. Unlike the city of San Antonio, which is not the most eye-catching part of Ibiza, the bay of San Antonio is truly an outstanding natural shelter and ideal for incredible boat trips around the best beaches in Ibiza. The beauty of its islands, islets, coves and cliffs are one of the last havens for endemic forest vegetation and they are the perfect spots for sailing during the summer days.
During the summer, the prevailing winds appear from the East, meaning the bay is very well sheltered from any wind and all waves. With no waves reaching the boat, the vessel will barely sway while out at sea. This will only improve your experience, allowing you to be more comfortable and removing the chances of getting seasick while onboard your Ibiza boat trip.
If experiencing a memorable boat trip around Ibiza is still on the top of your list, take a look at all our photos from last summer of cherished moments in Ibiza and Formentera.
Ideal conditions for Ibiza sailing boat trips
Not only does the bay of San Antonio regularly offer the perfect conditions for sailing boat trips in Ibiza, as previously mentioned, but it is also overflowing with some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in Spain. Many of these incredible beaches have recently been selected among the 20 best beaches in Spain to visit, such as Cala Bassa, Cala Conta (also known as Playas de Compte), Cala Salada and Conejera Island. With all the astounding beaches San Antonio, and Ibiza in general, has to offer, you are going to wish you had more time aboard to encounter them all!
On our way back to the port from an unforgettable day anchored at one of these coves, we will sail in front of the famous Café del Mar and Café Mambo, where hundreds of people gather daily to watch the gorgeous sunset. Imagine being just a few meters from the shore, relaxing on the net of a catamaran with a drink at hand, sharing the view of this spectacular sunset, while those at shore enthusiastically clap their hands and search for that last green ray of sunshine when the sun sets just under the sea. There is no better way to end the utmost incredible Ibiza boat trip!
This video does not do it justice, better seen live sunset in front of Cafe del Mar and Cafe Mambo
Unlike tears in rain, all these moments will NEVER be lost in time.
Ibiza catamaran trip itinerary full description
Although the port or beach where you embark from can vary depending on the itinerary planned, embarking usually takes place around noon at the yacht club in San Antonio. Here begins our sailing adventure!
After an hour of sailing we will arrive at Cala Bassa The waters of Cala Bassa are so transparent that our anchor will be seen at depths over 12 meters. While anchored at Cala Bassa we can swim around the catamaran, snorkel the stunning turquoise waters, challenge ourselves paddle boarding, or take a ride to the beach on the zodiac for some lunch at the many restaurants, cafes and beach bars Cala bassa has to offer.
After lunch, we can choose to continue beach hopping to Playas de Comte, between Ibiza and Isla del Bosque, or set sail for the island of Conejera, where, because it is a natural reserve, we will not be able to disembark but we can enjoy diving into the clear waters or go snorkelling around the impressive marine reserve filled with huge banks of coloured fish.
We then will weigh anchor and sail back to our port, stopping by Café del Mar for the most remarkable sunset.
Finally, after sunset, we will return to the Yacht Club in San Antonio for the unwanted finish of our most memorable boat trip in Ibiza.

We don't need to return to port on Friday night and, if you wish, we can spend the night anchored off one of the beaches in the Bay of San Antonio, venture off to the island of Formentera (weather permitting) or stay a little closer to Cala Jondal, in Porroig beach, so you can get to Blue Marlin directly from our boat charter Ibiza.
It is certainly one of the favorite clubs for our groups of bachelorette parties in Ibiza. Going back to port is also optional on Saturday night, so we can anchor at any other beach of your choice since we don't need to be back at the port until Sunday at 19:00 in order to check-out.
Fees for Ibiza hen do packages on our boats
