Edorta – Professional skipper Ibiza

Hello! My name is Edorta and I have always been passionate about the sea. I was born in a place where ships were part of a lifestyle for most people. When I was a child, small traditional wooden boats, paddle boats, and even trawlers were always being built on the banks of the Nervión River. They also made fishing boats of all shapes and sizes, merchant ships, tankers and super-tankers. If you are from Portugalete, you always have an adventure to tell and there is usually a boat involved!

I could not imagine myself happier being anywhere other than the sea.

I arrived at the Balearic Islands for the first time in the late 70s and fell in love immediately. I was not a sailor. I was a young kid dazzled by psychedelia and soul searching. I was more excited with Jimy Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and the Rolling Stones in those years than with Moetissier or Sir Robin Knox Johnston (because I did not yet know of these last ones). To summarize, I will say that my career went down the road of rock and all its variants. I set up a small neighbourhood rock bar, formed my own rock band, coordinated tours for rock bands and drove the rock stars to their desired locations. One day, after many years, I decided that the healthiest thing for me was to take a breath of fresh air outside of the Rock industry. Still I love her essence.

Pensively staring out into the open sea ahead.

I already had a small French sailboat, “the Isle of Jade”, which I sailed through the Bay of Biscay. A few years into my 40s, after a gruelling tour, I was able to save enough money to live well for some time. It was then that I decided to fulfil my dream of something I always wanted to do but, for whatever reason, I was never able to do. I wanted to be a sailor, a real sailor, who lives in the sea and for the sea! I still want to be one. It is something that you never know if you have completely achieved.

So I went to Bermeo and enrolled in classes for professional sailing. The life of an aged student was one of the healthiest experiences I have ever had. I also had low moments, but I finished my studies, did days at sea, joined crews for trawlers, spend some time aboard catamarans and ferry motor boats, and for the last few years I have been living and stacking miles on my new sailboat Kais that I bought in 2008. With him, I have made a living chartering around these marvellous islands along with some other wonderful places.

Recently, having dinner with my friend Jose Navas and the ineffable Captain Jose Zorrilla, the idea arose of joining the team of skippers at CharterAlia- the company in which Navas is the “Alma Mater”. I did not even rack my brain thinking whether or not to accept. An excited “YES!” emanated from the depths of my heart. Not to mention that the great Fede was also a part of the team. What more could you ask for?

So here I am, preparing my backpack to go meet these guys, with absolute confidence that the best is yet to come. I am sure that this summer we will have an amazing time enjoying these waters that we know so well and that we both respect and love.

I will not elaborate more because I feel that it is not necessary. All that I have left to say is that I am at your disposal on the island of Ibiza. This is my goodbye. I will be waiting for you aboard our catamaran!
