How to sail with a catamaran

The catamarans have become popular during the last years in the industry of boat hires in Ibiza. Catamarans have gained increasing prominence in holiday navigation. In fact, at a particular level, there are many shipowners who opt for multihulls when buying a boat.

Basically, a catamaran is a sailing or motorsports boat, consisting of two elongated and narrow hulls that are joined by a platform. They do not have ballast, so they are a lighter type of boat than monohulls, in addition to being more stable and safe. Although catamarans can be motor and sail, the most common is that they have an engine in each helmet.

What nautical certifications do I need to sail in Ibiza?

The nautical qualifications are titles that authorize you to drive boats in Ibiza, either by motor or sail. Depending on the characteristics of the boat and the distance to the coastline you want to sail to, you will need a nautical title or another.

The motor boats in Ibiza that are less than 5 meters in length and less than 11.25 kW of power do not need any titling. In the case of sailing boats, those less than 6 meters are also exempt, as well as jet skis, provided they do not pass the two miles of the coast and are used only during the day.

Guide of nautical words

The basic nautical words are part of the fundamental vocabulary of sailors and nautical enthusiasts. The nautical has its own lexicon, and we must know the basic nautical terms to be able to navigate naturally in this marine environment. In most of the occasions we will sail together with other people, so the knowledge of the basic nautical terms is fundamental to get a good communication on board.

There are four basic nautical terms that you should know: those that designate the four sides of the boat. We will refer to the front and back of the ship as bow and stern. We will use the terms starboard and port to talk about the right and left side of the boat, seen from stern to bow. When we talk about the dimensions of a ship, we do not say length and breadth but length and beam. The interior part of the boat is usually called a bathtub. Sometimes we also refer to the windward and leeward expressions. The windward is the part from where the wind comes from a certain point, while the opposite part from where the wind comes from.

Equipment for recreational vessels

The equipment compulsory for recreational boats is regulated by the Ministry of Development in Spain. This governmental body regulates the safety equipment that must carry on board all recreational vessels to prevent fires and other accidents.

In summary, we could say that the smaller our vessel is closer to the coast we sail, and the less equipment we need. And the other way around, the bigger our ship is, we will have authorization to sail far from the coast, and we will need to have more equipment. According to the ministerial order, the equipment for recreational boats is mandatory for all boats that are registered. Therefore, it does not include those vessels that are exempt from registration. The equipment for sports boats includes safety equipment, rescue, fire, etc.
