Talamanca Beach Ibiza

The beach of Talamanca is one that is known for its excellent family atmosphere in combination with its proximity to the city. You can arrive to this beach walking only 20 to 30 minutes. Formerly, the beach of Talamanca was linked to the bay of Ibiza but, when building the pier of Marina Botafoch at the end of the 80s, it was separated. In the past I would refer to Talamanca as “the port for the poor” since all those who could not afford to pay the excessive prices of the moorings of the nearby marinas of the port of Ibiza were constantly anchoring at this beach.

To resolve the dilemma of the overload of Ibiza yacht rental that demand docking in one of the four marinas of the port of Ibiza, leaving a scarce, almost nil, supply of moorings in high season offered by these marinas, the authorities are studying the possibility of placing ecological mooring buoys in Talamanca. The Town Hall of Ibiza began in 2016 with a basic project of ecological anchorages in the Ibicencan bay. With this project, the oceanic Posidonia fields of lbiza and Formentera will be recovered. These meadows represent one of the lungs of the Mediterranean and thanks to them Ibiza and Formentera can boast their turquoise and transparent waters.

Ecological anchorages in the bay of Talamanca

The highlights of this project are the following:

  • It will be prohibited to anchor in Talamanca during the winter. During the summer, the number of boats that until now anchor here as they please will be substantially reduced. In high season it is usual to have around 250 boats, sailboats, catamarans and yachts in the bay. This includes some mega yachts of great length, which cause the most damage with their large anchors.

The meadows of Posidonia found throughout the Balearic islands, including on the seabed of Talamanca, represent one of the lungs of the Mediterranean, making the transparent turquoise water possible.
  • Reduction to a maximum of 98 boats, meaning it could be fewer.
  • That there is not a single boat, yacht, sailboat or catamaran, either Ibiza yacht hire or vessels for personal use, that anchors on the oceanic Posidonia reef. This point is vital because it is thanks to the Posidonia that the sea is clean and turquoise. The Posidonia meadows extend along an arc of 900 metres between the eastern and western ends of Talamanca.
  • Eliminate the numerous fixed anchorages, usually made with cement, that are scattered on the seabed. In short, it is planned to clean the bottom of the bay.
  • Creation of swimming zones free of boats. This means that all types of motor boats, sailboats, and yachts, Ibiza boat charter or vessels for personal use, in Ibiza will be obligated to stay 200 meters from the swimming area. This will remove smaller vessels from the shore and allow people to enjoy the beach of Talamanca at peace.

The goal is to eliminate anchoring from the oceanic Posidonia reef in Talamanca, a vital change to assure the sea remains clean and turquoise.

Regrettably, in the past, we have also had problems with the outfall (channelling that serves to evacuate wastewater from a population to a sewage plant or to the sea). When it breaks, the water becomes polluted and with an awful smell that makes it impossible to enjoy the beach. Fortunately, after years of perseverance and denunciations to the higher ranked authorities on environmental issues by the residents of the area, a new outfall was launched in the summer of 2017. The water is now transparent again and calling our names.

A few useful notes about Talamanca

  • Although the best option to visit Talamanca is on board our boat hire in Ibiza, if this is not possible, we recommend that you do not drive to this beach because parking is scarce and can become frustrating. Instead, there is an efficient taxi stop only 50 metres from the beach. Another advantage that the city of Ibiza has is that it is mostly flat surface. This makes it easy to ride bicycle or even walk to this beach, as previously mentioned.

  • At the time of anchoring one of our Ibiza boat rental in Talamanca, we must bear in mind that this long bay is oriented towards the east. During the summer months, the prevailing winds usually come from the east, causing sea to enter the bay. However, this minimal inconvenience is more than compensated by the proximity of this beach to the centre of the city of Ibiza and all the possibilities at arm’s reach, such as supermarkets, nautical stores, or the famous Pacha nightclub.

Oriented towards the east, boats choose anchoring in Talamanca over sheltering from the prevailing winds due to the convenience of having the heart of Ibiza and all its luxuries at arm’s reach.
  • There are two piers for an Ibiza boat hire in Talamanca, both petite but very practical. The closest to Botafoch is walking distance from Hotel Argos. Some speed boats occupy this area throughout the summer since it includes a small jetty for boats of shorter lengths.

Speed boats tend to dock all summer long at this small but practical pier in Talamanca beach, near Botafoch, walking distance from Hotel Argos.

Located at the opposite end of the bay is the pier of Sa Punta. You will recognize it by the restaurant with cheerful and modern decorations nearby.  From this jetty, used by boat charter Ibiza, you can see the old fortress of the city.
